SASHA Farm Animal Sanctuary
A fun filled day at SASHA Farm, a Michigan based animal sanctuary.
This past weekend I took a trip out to SASHA Farm Animal Sanctuary, and I have to say that it was probably one of the most magical experiences I've had in a while. It's one thing to just look at animals from a distance, where they are just things. But to interact with animals in person allows you to create a bond, you start seeing them as living creatures, with characters and feeling... instead of these caricatures on food packaging or children's books.
Driving out to the farm on country roads was a pretty spectacular way to start the day. But once you get to the farm, you just get this sense of home. Everyone is extremely friendly, the animals are pretty tame! My camera bag straps were of great interest to a ram named Rambo, who proceeded to chew on them a few times, as I walked around the pasture.
I feel like it's critical for anyone who hasn't interacted with farm animals to do so, as it gives you a very powerful insight into their being. It's important to understand what makes up a large part of our protein intake, and how our decision to consume one form of protein over another can in turn dictate the lives of countless animals.
I am not attempting to sway food consumption patterns, but I feel that having a closer connection to things that we otherwise under-think, will have a lasting impression in how we choose to eat. Go meet a chicken, a pot-bellied pig, and a few cows, you might just feel inclined to eat less of these beautiful animals, all while saving the planet.
